The science behind nesting season: why spring triggers the urge to move home

With brighter and longer days, it’s no wonder that spring triggers the need to move home and start afresh with a renewed sense of motivation.

Spring is known for fresh starts and new beginnings, so it’s no wonder that when the sun comes out and the weather becomes warmer, most of us are feeling more motivated and energised. This new sense of optimism also brings a need for change. For many, this means wanting to move home and interestingly, this is rooted in both psychology and nature.

Known as “nesting season” this time of the year is something that we see across nature – animals ensuring their homes are ready for the months ahead and although “nesting season” affects people in different ways, we surely are not immune to it.

What is nesting season all about?

Nesting season is a period of preparation and renewal. In the animal world, it’s a time of building shelter and ensuring future comfort.

Similarly for people, nesting season occurs in spring and it’s a time for new beginnings. It encourages us to take a step back, evaluate our current situation and make adjustments. Unsurprisingly, activity in the housing market tends to pick up around this time too.

The science behind spring motivation

As the days get warmer and longer, so do our motivation levels. With more exposure to sunlight and increased serotonin levels, the season creates the perfect environment for us to be more receptive to change. This lift in mood can make big decisions more manageable, including the decision to move home.

At the same time, our environment starts to feel more welcoming, with sunlight making living spaces look more appealing and budding gardens painting a perfect picture of what it would be like to make a new house your next home.

Why spring triggers the urge to move home

There is a reason why spring is a popular time with buyers and sellers. Besides natural daylight complementing new homes and blooming gardens, for families, moving during the spring/summer season is often less of a hassle compared to autumn/winter. There’s less chance of bad weather interrupting your moving process and the spring/summer season is also when the property markets become more active, both for buyers and sellers.

What this means for buyers and sellers

Nesting season for buyers means an abundance of choices to pick from. However, as more people are looking for their new forever home, this means the competition can be tough.

For sellers, spring is the perfect time of the year to tap into the nesting season and showcase their homes in the best light. This time of the year creates the perfect environment for utilising that spring sunshine with an increased property demand, leading to quicker and easier sales.

At Homes by Esh, we often notice that nesting season is a time when many people are starting to consider moving and slowly but surely looking for their next home.

A season for fresh starts

Nesting season is when a combination of science, lifestyle and timing come together to create the perfect environment for a change in scenery. Brighter and longer days, paired with a renewed sense of motivation and energy set us just in the right mood to start thinking about what comes next.

If you happen to feel this seasonal shift in the air, you’re not the only one. Now could be the perfect time to take the leap and find your forever home with Homes by Esh. With plenty of light and garden space in our developments, you’re sure to find something of your liking.
