7 budget-friendly decorating ideas that look luxe

Decorating can be an expensive business. To achieve the high-end, movie-home aesthetic of your dreams, it might feel as though you have to spend all your savings on designer décor, custom furniture, and top-of-the-range hardware, or else win the lottery.

But creating a beautiful, luxurious looking home needn’t bankrupt you. With a few clever purchases and crafty interior design tricks, you can bring glamour to your interior without going beyond your budget.

Layered textures

A truly luxe home can hold your attention with the simplest décor. They contain a subtle glamour that other, similarly decorated homes cannot hope to emulate.

The secret to this is a rich layering of textures. On first glance, a glamourous living room or bedroom appears deceptively simple, with a muted colour palette and minimal furniture, but it is the throw draped over the side of the sofa, the mixture of distinct but complementary cushions, the tablecloth, and the layered bed coverings that elevate the space and tie it together.

Once you know, it’s relatively easy to apply this trick to your own home. Combine different materials in similar tones to prevent it appearing chaotic.

Playing with height

Luxe spaces are airy spaces, so if your home is on the smaller side, a glamourous home might seem beyond your reach.

This isn’t the case. By playing with perspective, you can create the illusion of greater space for a grander appearance. Floor-to-ceiling curtains, tall plants, and long mirrors and pictures will make the room seem softer and higher, especially when paired with lower seating and surfaces.

Artwork

Bare walls or an abundance of cheaper prints can make a room feel like student accommodation, so instead, install large, statement artwork.

While buying large pieces of art can be pricey, making your own is not. If you have some artistic skills, buy a cheap canvas and get painting. If you don’t, use rugs or throws as ‘high-end’ wall hangings.

Change your hardware

A small tweak can make a huge difference. While replacing an entire wall of kitchen cabinets is expensive, replacing the doorknobs is not.

Elevate cheaper cabinets, drawers, wardrobes, or doors by replacing their knobs with either vintage or ultra-modern alternatives.

Add architectural details

The internet has completely democratised the DIY business. Now, with the help of a blog or YouTube video, anyone can add some architectural interest to an otherwise bland modern interior.

With a little patience and the right tools, you can DIY crown moulding and wall trim to create a more interesting canvas for your décor. You can also add wall panelling for greater luxury.

Declutter

One of the cheapest and most effective ways to create a luxe interior is to clear it of unnecessary clutter.

No high-end home is covered in children’s toys, papers, knick-knacks, or mess. You don’t have to adhere to a completely minimalist mindset, but you should try to ensure that everything on display in the room has a purpose. Anything else can be stored away, sold/donated, or thrown out.

To make decluttering easier, you can invest in some useful and attractive storage solutions, such as boxes, chests, or hollow furniture.

Maximise light

A well-lit room is a more attractive room. It will appear more spacious and make you feel more content.

Make the most of any natural light by replacing heavy window hangings, moving anything that is blocking the sun’s path, and using reflective surfaces and materials to boost its effect. Secondly, replace cheap-looking light fittings and shades with more stylish ones, with warmer bulbs. It is an inexpensive and effective way to bring greater texture and interest to the room.

With a little imagination and some industry tricks, your home can become luxe for less.
