The market town of Darlington is one of the North East’s most popular towns, thanks both to its architecture, easy access and the fantastic array of attractions and amenities. The town offers a wide shopping experience with the Cornmill Shopping Centre, high street chain stores and a long-standing, quality indoor market, as well as many independent traders.
Darlington owes much of its development to the influence of local Quaker families in the Victorian era, and is famous as the terminus of Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first passenger railway. The clock tower, Darlington’s most famous landmark, was a gift to the town in 1864 and the bells are the sister bells to those inside the Elizabeth Tower at the Houses of Parliament in London, the most famous of which is of course Big Ben.
Located in the Tees Valley, Darlington is renowned as “the Gateway to the Tees Valley” and provides excellent transport links both North and South via the A1(M). This is complemented by the nearby Darlington Bank Top Railway Station, which lies on the East Coast Mainline, with journey times to London taking around 2hrs 45mins. The local airport, Durham Tees Valley International Airport offers flights to both domestic and European destinations.
